Response of streamflow to multiple earthquakes

چکیده
[1] We analyze the streamflow response of Sespe Creek, CA, to several large earthquakes. We find that flow increased after three earthquakes, and that the observed changes in flow have the same character. Both those earthquakes that induced static extension and those that induced static contraction cause flow to increase; streamflow thus appears to respond to dynamic strain. We find that all postseismic responses can be explained by a model in which pore pressure increases coseismically without any changes in hydraulic diffusivity. There is a particle velocity threshold in the range of 5–20 cm/s to induce the pore pressure increase.

Streamflow and water well responses to earthquakes.
Earthquake-induced crustal deformation and ground shaking can alter stream flow and water levels in wells through consolidation of surficial deposits, fracturing of solid rocks, aquifer deformation, and the clearing of fracture-filling material. Although local conditions affect the type and amplitude of response, a compilation of reported observations of hydrological response to earthquakes ind...
متن کاملOPTIMAL SMART BASE ISOLATION SYSTEM FOR MULTIPLE EARTHQUAKES
Hybrid control system composed of a base isolation system and a magneto-rheological damper so-called smart base isolation is one of effective semi-active control system in controlling the seismic response of structures. In this paper, a design method is proposed for designing the smart base isolation system in order to achieve an effective performance under multiple earthquakes. The base mass, ...
متن کاملTHE CAPABILITY OF OPTIMAL SINGLE AND MULTIPLE TUNED MASS DAMPERS UNDER MULTIPLE EARTHQUAKES
The main focus of this research has been to investigate the effectiveness of optimal single and multiple Tuned Mass Dampers (TMDs) under different ground motions as well as to develop a procedure for designing TMD and MTMDs to be effective under multiple records. To determine the parameters of TMD and MTMDs under multiple records various scenarios have been suggested and their efficiency has be...
متن کاملEvaluating Seismic Effects on a Water Supply Network and Quantifying Post-Earthquake Recovery
This paper summarises the impact of major earthquakes, 2010–2011, on Christchurch’s water supply network and what recovery measures have been applied, what worked well, what did not and why. A number of issues related to the open nature of the Christchurch water supply network were identified during earthquakes. It was difficult to manage large water supply pressure zones during the post-earthq...
متن کاملEffects of Far- and Near-Field Multiple Earthquakes on the RC SDOF Fragility Curves Using Different First Shock Scaling Methods
Typically, to study the effects of consecutive earthquakes, it is necessary to consider definite intensity levels of the first shock. Methods commonly used to define intensity involve scaling the first shock to a specified maximum interstorey drift. In this study the structure’s predefined elastic spectral acceleration caused by the first shock is also considered for scaling. This study aims to...
